For Pride, Beth and Michelle replay one of their favorite conversations: a deeply personal exploration of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. What appears on the surface to be a colorful comedy about three drag queens stranded in a fading Midwestern town becomes something far more complicated when viewed with open eyes.
Beth and Michelle examine the film’s blurred understanding of drag and transgender identity, its casting of three straight male stars, and the unsettling realities beneath its humor. Vida is sexually assaulted by a police officer, Chi-Chi is threatened by a group of men, and Carol Ann lives with an abusive husband. Remove the assumption that drag itself is funny, and the movie begins to resemble an unintentional drama about women surviving violence, isolation, racism, homophobia, and the demand to remain silent.
Yet the film also understands something beautiful about humanity. The queens bring color, confidence, and connection into a town trapped in emotional stillness, while its residents ultimately choose solidarity over fear. The movie gets plenty wrong, but those failures sometimes illuminate what it gets wonderfully right: people begin to change when they truly see one another.
