Moonrise Kingdom and THRIVE

This weekend we were so lucky to have Pat Green and Allaina Humphreys to talk about Moonrise Kingdom and the THRIVE initiative. We had a wonderful time and I am also very nervous about doing a good job as host. I'm an introvert and it takes a LOT of spoons to go outside my comfort zones. Gratefully, Pat and Allaina make it entirely worth the quantity of spoons.

My take on Moonrise Kingdom is that it's an imperfect movie about neurodivergence placed into a perfectly imperfect setting. It's not, to me, simply a matter of autism vs allistic but rather various neurotypes seeking recognition within an allistic world. The simple settings and dialogue are all at odds with the complex moments of silence and color placement. It's like looking at a Norman Rockwell painting and realizing that there is a Edvard Munch painting within it.

There is a simple story about children trying to figure out where they belong in families/situations in which they feel and are treated very much as outsiders. But nothing is really simple and it becomes less so as you continue to look.
